The courses at http://homeschoolprogramming.com/ should definitely be free!

Do you know about any similar courses that are in fact free? I notice a lack of free materials regarding this very topic.

Yes, you could argue the price is affordable but still, if we want to promote real widespread access to technology (worldwide) then all educators should have access to these materials, including those based in countries without much purchasing power.

What do you think?
 
We are working on having resources and teaching ideas lesson plans added right here in edchat.net - unfortunately to map all key subjects and make them readily accessible internationally is challenging. There is little funding in the field and often companies are unable to make profit so advancement is slow, in technology based subjects especially computer science it is important to keep the teaching materials up to date as there is no point learning redundant code.

Nevertheless you will see the resources for computer science develop over time, bear in mind we have hundreds of subjects and age groups to cover.

If you find or produce good quality learning materials please share them on edchat for other teachers to benefit.

"Profit here, profit there!" Gains in education have unnerved me up to the hilt for a long time now.

Where are the government programs targeting this valuable aspect of human life in a massive scale? It seems that as a society we're stagnating in the formation of a whole new generation because "it is not sufficiently profitable."

Don't get me wrong: I'm not saying that educators should live in poverty or that the educational field should be engaged in a "for art's sake" basis.

But -reflecting a bit- there really should be many more grants for these educational projects than for others that are less relevant, serving no higher purpose than education.

Well underinvestment in physical and human capital is where Western Civilisation has fallen short. Perhaps it is even so internationally the issue that arrises here however is should the state be responsible for the education of children or is it the responsibility of the adults who created them?

Many believe that it is there responsibility to ensure their own children have sufficient education and create a stockpile of resources to ensure they have said education or have enough capital to use the private education sector which is exactly why we are working on making educational ideas accessible, easy to follow and easy to access. It's not about money, with homeschooling parents can get the very best from their children however relying entirely on state projects and education at present is not something I would recommend. Nevertheless most teachers and people that work in this field do an outstanding job and I commend them.
 
There are a lot of free courses online but the disadvantage is you are not guaranteed to get a genuine certificate. I think that recognisable universities should be offering some of their courses for free which will benefit the poor and those who may want to continue with their studies. I have never heard scholarship programmes for online courses which is also recommendable.
 
There are there courses called MOOCs short form for Massive Online Open Courses which are offered by prestigious universities and they are quite good for professional advancement and well recognised. A good example is Coursera. They are also stringent on the requirements to join so its not everyone who gets in meaning they are qualitative. A simple Google search will yield excellent results on these courses.

There are places that allow you to take a final test to obtain a certificate. Either way even if you don't get a certificate it will help you if you decide to take the course in a classroom.
 
Try installing the app called edx to your phone, it contains free courses and also they offer certificate of completion whenever you finish a course, the only thing that you'll pay is the certificate. Well know universities like harvard is available in this app, I already tried it and it really works, it also once trending on twitter which means it is really legit. The other good thing in this app is that learning here is depends on you own pace.
