All Ages Using Google Map To Teach Geography

Hello everyone! :)

I find that teaching about geography in a way where a student has the ability to navigate and look onto places he/she is interested in is a good way of helping students learn in an interactive way. Technology now makes it easier to navigate through the world map up until the smallest towns in different parts of the world unlike before where you have to have a separate map for the world, for each country, each city and so on and so forth.

Have you ever tried using the Google map or any other kind of online map to teach geography?

Well I would like to think that a standard map and globe would do the trick for much of it, and of course there are other computer programs out there. In this case, I would say that it might be best to just leave that to getting directions, and use other apps and programs for the actual teaching of geography. I feel this might be more of a distraction for the kids than a tool to help them learn. I could be wrong, though.

Well, I personally think it could be a great idea considering teachers would use google maps from a smart TV or a device with a big screen in order to let the kids see whatever the teacher is trying to explain, I really doubt it is going to be an easy process to do it with smart phones, I barely think that the kids can make use of that kind of phones at their early age, you should state the average age this technique will be aimed for so it will be easier to understand.

I think that this kind of usage is conducive for any age but it is best for the older students. I do think that though that as long as a young student already knows how to understand the usage of a map, then it is okay to introduce this concept to him/her. My 6-year-old who has just started learning about our country's geography through the use of a physical map is now also showing interest in using the online map. He wants to know where an exact location is and how to get there especially the places that he personally knows so he navigates through the Google map on his own.

Google maps is a great resource and it can really help students relate to geography more. Since it's got a satellite and street view they can actually go to the places that they might be learning in other subjects, such as history. This helps connect the dots and creates a greater awareness of the students surroundings.

I think that is something that could be incorporated in all schools, it's a great idea. Google has pretty much the whole planet in the map, and it's very easy to navigate and use. It would look really nice on a large projection screen, and the students I'm sure would be really interested in learning like that.

I know I would've loved it because I'm getting a chance to actually see the real thing instead of looking at pages in a book all the time.

Google maps as pretty much transformed ho people look at the world and it makes it possible to even almost visit places that we would never have the chance of doing before so I certainly think that it can be used to teach geography. Google maps and software such as that just shows that technology can be used for beneficial purposes and these days when it seems as if the media is filled with negative articles about the internet, we need to remember that it's done a lot of good things as well.

I most certainly agree, I think that the internet has done more good then bad, but unfortunately it's much easier to focus on the bad and ignore the good.

I never thought about this before, but it definitely would be a great idea. We'd somehow be giving Gmaps a good use after wall, great idea, indeed.

I think Google maps, is a great way to teach geography. Students will not only see the map of the place but also will see how it looks like in real life. Plus Google map has many tools, like measuring distances, get directions to a place and use Google pegman for streetview. I think like that students will enjoy learning Geography.

Google Maps can definitely be adapted to become a great teaching tool. It shows detailed maps for all parts of the world, so it's very useful for teaching geography. Another thing s that the satellite view function is quite fun, as it lets you get a closer look at what is on the ground in different places.

google maps can defenetly use as a tool for teaching,it shows all the details you need to teach and its very easy to use.and not just that google maps also shows satellite point of view

Well I think it is a great idea to teach students geography with a Google Map, It has many tool to help the student engage and focus more on what they are doing. It also has a different view that is best.

I do not teach geography and I teach language, thus, I have never felt a necessity of using google map; however, I believe that technology can help a teacher to deliver a lesson quickly. For instance, I have often suggested students to create a group on the facebook and share what they have leared in the school.

I think you made a point there, after class interactions help improve and promote their learning process because it will give them the platform to discuss the lessons among themselves.

I think it is a good idea to use google map to teach geography. It will no be boring to students cause it uses phone. We should adopt the new technology to teach and to learn. This will be a big help for teachers to teach geography and the students can learn it fast.

That was a brilliant idea. Using Google map to teach Geography is exciting. It can make the lessons more interesting and more interactive. The children become more responsive because they can relate to the lessons they are discussing.

It's really a brilliant idea and I love it because its more educating than just telling the students about a country without showing any thing to them as a practical way of explaining.

It's a wonderful idea, however, Google map is not always correct. For example, it excludes the real picture of how things are, simply because a state or a region could be self proclaimed in theory.

Yeah you have a point there, Google Map is not always truth but I think to those countries that doesn't give google a full interference into their geographical territory like North Korea. I still think it's better than nothing.
