I never got the hang of these, but I know that they have taught my son to use these in math and he has found them to be very useful. as a matter of fact, i think that they make the concept of place value very easy to comprehend, wllowing him to pick on the concept quickly and move on to tougher, more complex topics quickly. I think they should be used more widespread in formal education situations.

Hi there,

This resources is usually used in formal education for children aged between 3-11 but can be used with other students who may not have grasped the idea of place value. There are several ways you can use the resource. 1 - is to use tens and units where you have small cubes to represent units and blocks of 10 of them to represent ten. When the child builds up 10 units they can exchange it for a ten and place that in the tens column. And vice versa, when a child has a problem like 10 - 2 they can swap their block of ten for 10 units and take 2 away. They will gradually become more familiar with bridging the 10.
2 - Children can use it to write maths numbers into the correct column and see how after 9 it will move up a column.

Where this resource really comes in useful is when the student is crossing any barrier, for example going from 0.9 to 1.0 they can actually see that 10 0.1's make 1.0 and 10 1.0's make 10 and so on.
