Overview

In this lesson the children will begin by recapping their previous knowledge of 3-digit numbers and base 10. They will then cover ordering and comparing numbers up to 1000 with a power point presentation if available. The last section focuses on writing 3-digit numbers in words. The lesson involves teacher led input, followed by child exploration to help embed what has been taught. The children will return for a shorter carpet time before completing a worksheet.

Procedure

Introduction ( 5 minutes )
Spend time recapping and recalling the children's previous knowledge on 3-digit numbers. Use base 10 to remind them of hundreds, tens and ones. Discuss the place value of each digit. Demonstrate a hundreds, tens and ones grid, as seen below, using a whiteboard. Place some Base 10 on the grid to jog their memories

Presentation ( 10 minutes )

Introduce today's learning objectives. Show the children the power point and work through the questions. Order the numbers together as a class. Narrating as you go i,e, I know that 340 will come before 512 because....... Ask the children to explain their thinking too. Do the same with the comparing number questions. -Recap the symbols < and > to check their understanding. If they struggle explain that the widest section is bigger and greater. The crocodile mouth open to snap the biggest number -Use the vocabulary greater than and less then when comparing. -Demonstrate using base 10 symbols if needed. ** If you do not have access to ICT, simply write a variety of 3 digit numbers onto the board and the children can still help you to order them. This is the same with comparing. Write 2 3-digit numbers on the board the the children can compare them using < and>

Main Activities ( 30 minutes )

Exploratory time The classroom will be set up for different groups to work. It depends on the class size as to how you want to organise this. For a class of 30 I would split into 6 mixed ability groups of 5. - Set 3 tables with the ordering cards. -Set 3 tables with the comparing cards. Give the children time to work together to order the cards they have been given or to see how many sets up comparing pairs they can make. After 5-7 minutes,ask the children to muddle the cards back up and switch over to the opposite activity. Teacher Input Bring the children back to the carpet to explain the worksheet. Quickly show the questions which are based on the activity they have just practiced. Then highlight the writing numbers in words section. On a whiteboard show the children what this means (even though there is also an example) At the end of the powerpoint there is a slide showing how to spell the numbers 1-9 . Leave this up as an aid to help them.

Extension Task
For the children moving towards mastery of these concepts, it is great for them to become the teacher. As the higher ability finish, pair them with lower ability or those struggling to help them to complete their learning. It is great and invaluable experience to hear them teaching and explaining things to their friends.
