Teaching health consciousness to grade school students

Health is discussed in the health and science subject usually in the junior high school. But children as young as 1st grade should already be aware of health that starts with the sanitation not only of the surroundings but particularly with the food. Eating dirty food can cause diseases such as cholera or dysentery. With the prevalence of street foods which are cooked and sold in the streets grade school children should be aware of the risks that those food pose on the health.

Yes I agree grade school students should also be taught about health consciousness so that they will have like a foundation on what to avoid and what to consume, and how to make their surroundings clean as possible to avoid getting sick or diseases.

There are a lot of students who aren't health conscious because they are still kids and they believe that their bodies would be fine. It's important that you as a teacher would always help them to become health conscious.

Kids at these ages don't really understand the importance of not eating dirty foods. The way to get them to eat clean or healthy foods is through a mixture of example and explaining stuff to them in kid's terms. That means I should also eat my own vegetables and carefully explain to them why eating vegetables and washing my hands will make me (and them) big and strong.

Also learn to cook and add garlic to everything. Vegetables you don't like will take even worse when you don't cook them the way you want them.

Yes, I agree with you that it's always best to teach the young children about nutritious food. To avoid them from any illness or sickness brought from unhealthy eating habit. I am also thinking that parents should teach or introduce their child at home the proper nourishment. Preparing some delicious healthy food like vegetables , fruits, meat and fish. This will make them healthy and they will choose it against junk foods. Proper sanitation starts at home.

Yes, I totally agree. Teaching health consciousness to grade-school students is important because at a young age, they have to realize how to maintain healthy lifestyle. Schools have a great responsibility regarding this as well, start by promoting healthy food at the cafeteria and whatnot.

Teaching health consciousness would be a great help for them. These would make their perspective to be more healthier and by that, as they grow they'll bring the lessons that they've learnt and gain a healthy and beautiful life. But I do hope that children would take this seriously and pass it on the next generation. Let Healthy Foods and Doings reign the world!

I have helped babysit a friend's kids twice. When she brought them, she brought all kinds of unhealthy snacks and fizzy drinks for them. I cooked healthy foods for them and when the kids asked for the snacks, I gently but firmly said no and they didn't even throw a temper tantrum because I quickly distracted them. When their mum returned, she was shocked to realize everything she had brought for them was uneaten. She said they'd scream their heads off at home if she refused to give it to them. I was actually disgusted by that but it is not my place to teach anyone how to raise their kids. I believe it is important to teach your kids healthy living as soon as possible and make the unhealthy snacks and fizzy drinks occasional treats rather than every day foods

Yes, it should be! To a certain degree obviously! Like smoking and drinking is bad and shouldn't be allowed at all (just like in Chechnya). I personally think teaching health awareness and consciousness is very important.

I think the first step is very important, towards explaining to children about healthy eating habits. As they are at a young age it is appropriate to find ways to explain things to them as simply as possible, so children can understand it that healthy foods can be tasty as well, and can bring many benefits to them.I think it is a good step that some schools already initiated offering exclusively healthy food in their canteens to learners.

For me, I agree that it is highly important to teach grade school students the importance of healthy living. One way of doing this is incorporating healthy eating and physical activity across the curriculum in a fun and creative ways, like using child-friendly, tablet-based apps. Also, another option is by utilizing fun coloring books introducing them to green leafy vegetables, or even short videos that promote other healthy activities.

First I as a teacher would show by example. I would eat in the cafeteria with my students. Teaching from a teacher doesn't have to just be confined to the classroom.

Yes, that is very true, students should always be discouraged from eating food that is sold on the street. It is the primary responsibility of the parents to make the children aware of this. However, teachers should also try and teach the students about the health risks that are associated with eating Street food.

Do you mean to say that we should cook food for the student to bring in school? That was the style of my mother which I didn't like. My classmates were all buying hot food in the school's canteen and I was there eating cold food. But I agree that cooked food at home assures our child of good nutrition and clean food as well although sometimes I also wished for lunch money to buy what I wanted.

Yes, Corzhens it's best to exert effort on preparing cook food for children's meal at school. To make sure they are eating the right food and they will not be starving. Giving them money might be deviated to buy other stuff. They like to eat candies than real food. In some case, kids doesn't like eating nutritious food because it's not their family's habit. They prefer to eat in fast food chain and street foods. I am also thinking that this all starts from discipline.

This reminds me of a classmate who would buy stationery and fancy note pads with her lunch money. We were not aware that she was not eating lunch often because of her obsession with such school supplies. One time she got sick and we learned that she had stomach problems not sure if it was ulcer. From then on her mother would be coming to school to bring her cooked food for her lunch.

It's not easy to be sick and it is always a good advantage if we let the child adapt good eating habit. I've seen and known some children who doesn't like to eat and just want to play. I am even impressed seeing those child who have good appetite of healthy good foods. I mean not all children like to eat fish, fruit and vegetables. They just want candy or processed foods. I've seen some licking ice cream during lunch time. There are also instances that a child cannot identity what kind of food he has eaten. It's weird but it happens. This is because eating nutritious food is not introduced on their homes.
