Autonomy. Simple as that.
I was never athletic and didn't ever feel comfortable socially, but give me a pencil and a piece of paper and I could not only entertain myself but create entire worlds and realities all to my own specifications. I was fortunate to grow up in a family who encouraged my creativity, and I drew all the time. Anyone who practices any craft for prolonged periods will develop advanced skills, and I did, and I was rewarded with praise. I became a kid who was good at something, and it fostered pride... self-esteem, where otherwise I was, quite frankly, a bit of an outcast.
I am friends with a professor of fine art at my local university. He has gone into prisons to teach art classes. He agrees with me fully that there are few better ways to afford the individual his own autonomy than facilitating his endeavors in the creative arts.
but other than that, I just like looking at pretty stuff.
