Using movie adaptations as an incentive for reading the book.

I am of the old school, I believe the child needs to read the book before he/she sees the movie adaptation.
Watching the movie on screen kills the skill of vivid imagination in the child. The young mind will be caught up in what it sees rather than what it has to imagine and bring to life. A reading a book is an exciting cognitive exercise for the child.. The child has to take a one dimensional story and add colors, smells, props, costumes etc. to bring the story to life.. This may not happen when all these senses are fed heavily through the movie.. Instead, read the book and discuss all these aspects with children and help them to widen their thought processes.
 
Books and movie adaptations have a lot of differences. A lot of the story gets cut off on a movie adaptation, there's also a bit of changes with the chronological order of how things happened. I have to agree that using the movie adaptations can be a great incentive for kids to start reading books. Based from personal experience, my eldest started reading all thanks to movie adaptations when I told him that there's a lot of scenes missing in the story. Curiosity got the best of him and he asked me for the book.
