Overview
In this lesson, the children will have the opportunity to practice their reading skills and demonstrate their comprehension of a text. The text is about dinosaurs. The teacher will begin by generating interest and discussion, as well as covering some key words which arise in the text. The children will then be tasked to independently read through the text and answer questions.

This is intended as an independent activity and it is not intended as a test. Therefore, if support is needed by the lower ability then it can be provided. This lesson can support summative assessment.

Learning Objective
  • I can answer questions correctly from a given text
Success Criteria
  • Children will be able to read and understand the given text.
  • Children will answer questions coherently from the text.

  • understand both the books they can already read accurately and fluently and those they listen to by: drawing on what they already know or on background information and vocabulary provided by the teacher
Reading
  • read books aloud, accurately, that are consistent with their developing phonic knowledge and that do not require them to use other strategies to work out words

By the end of year, read and comprehend informational texts, including history/social studies, science, and technical texts, in the grades 2-3 text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range.

Key Vocabulary
Comprehension, text, herbivore, carnivore, omnivore, asteroid

Procedure
Lead in / Warm Up / Introduction ( 5-10 minutes )
To engage the learner, have a quick discussion about what they already know about dinosaurs. This usually sparks a great deal of facts and talk.
Write any key facts/ words on the board that they suggest, such as;
Carnivore- a meat eating creature
Herbivore- a plant eating creature
Omnivore- a creature that eats both meat and plants
Asteroid- a huge rock found in space.

Presentation / Teacher Model ( 5-10 minutes )
Explain to the children that today they are going to be reading and understanding a text. They will then have some questions to answer from the text.
Show them the text of the middle ability (worksheet 1b), explain that their text may be slightly different to this but it will be similar.

Because this is a reading comprehension, ask the children to read it from the board to themselves.
Ask if there are any words they really don't understand. Clarify their understanding within reason.

Show the children their worksheets so the can see what they have to do. Remind them to write in full sentences.

Main Activities ( 20 minutes )
Split that class as needed ability wise and give either;
worksheet 1a- lower
worksheet 1b- mid
worksheet 1c- higher

Allow the children to complete this as independently as possible.
Deploy t/a's where needed to support various children, ensuring that any help given is marked onto the paper to determine what is supported.

Depending on your class, this could be marked within the lesson.
Higher ability could switch papers and look through each others papers
Mid ability could be marked as a group with the teacher giving answers
Lower ability could be marked as a group with t/a giving answers.
Marking with the children will help them to see where they have made mistakes, which may help their answers of a comprehension task in the future.

Plenary / Assessment ( 5 minutes )
As a bit of fun, the children can take it in turns to play T-Rex, Run.
You could make it cross curricular and compare times to see who goes for the longest!
