Overview
The students perform several activities in this lesson to identify and explain the properties of materials such as hardness, transparency, solubility, conductivity, and response to magnets.

Learning Objective
  • Students can explain the properties of materials.
Success Criteria
  • Students can identify the properties of different materials.
UK Curriculum Links Year 5 Programme of Study: Properties and changes of materials
  • compare and group together everyday materials on the basis of their properties, including their hardness, solubility, transparency, conductivity (electrical and thermal), and response to magnets

5-PS1-3 - Make observations and measurements to identify materials based on their properties.

Key Vocabulary
Hardness, solubility, transparency, conductivity, response to magnets

Procedure
What's in the box? ( 10 minutes )
1. Volunteer student will insert their hand inside the box.
2. The student will say out loud the texture, the size, or anything that they can feel upon touching the object.
3. The student is given 15 seconds to identify the object. If the student failed to provide the correct answer, another student could steal the chance to answer.
4. Once the correct answer is given, another volunteer student will identify another object.

Sample materials that can be placed inside the box:
1. Sponge
2. Clay
3. Metal spoon
4. Paper clip
5. Ruler

Guide questions:
1. How did you identify the objects inside?
2. How do you call these characteristics of objects that help us identify them?

Main Activities ( 40 minutes )
1. The students will form a group with 3-4 members, and they will be given a worksheet to work on. The teacher may roam around the classroom during this time or let the class do it at the same time by guiding them in each activity and giving them a response time for each task.
2. The students perform the activities and answer the worksheet.
3. The teacher collects the worksheets and answers the questions with the class.
