All Ages I hate music classes. What about you?

I'm so glad that I didn't have any music classes in high school and college. Don't get me wrong, I love music. I just can't stand the idea of singing in front of 50 other people. I don't have a nice voice and I tend to tremble when in front of people. I'm good when it comes to playing musical instruments. But singing? Never mind.

Music is definitely one of the subjects that I love to hate. Do you love or hate music class?
 
I loved music class but then again, I didn't have to sing in front of 50 other people. My problem with music class is that it didn't teach me to love music. All we did was learn musical notes, study sheets and sing carols. Really? I would've loved more interaction, more instruments to play with or to hear awesome facts about musicians, to be told that I can become a composer for video games or any other new medium. Sadly, none of that. I had to learn to appreciate music and what it really means on my own, much much later in life.

Yeah, this is so true. Music teachers tend to teach us music that we don't know about or don't have interest in singing or playing. They teach us folk songs and other oldies yet none about the current trends. I have no problem about classical music but it would be better in a music class if it offered more diversity.
 
I think whether you love or hate(d) music class depends on where you went to school and what kind of teachers you had. In elementary school I despised music class but loved chorus because we were able to put on shows and actually be physical and move around. In middle school, I played violin but as is the case with many "city" schools in the states you never progress beyond learning one song.

However in high school, and I went to a great one, I took guitar and drums classes. Our teachers were former hippies and tree huggers. Both classes were extremely fun. I also attended a special school once a week and there we learned piano and more drumming. However our instructor was cool, had modern song books and let us pull out whatever songs we wanted. He'd then take them and copy them and let us play them in our spare time.

So while I've seen both sides of the question, I actually enjoyed music class. I can't say I stuck with any of those instruments after high school but I do own a piano and a guitar. Everyone one in a while I play and try and remember.
 
I had to take a fine arts class for college and chose "intro to listening" which is a music class. Honestly it wasn't a bad class since all it was about was learning about different composers and types of music. We did have to listen to various pieces and part of our assignments as well as midterm and final was to identify the piece and composer. The only part that sucks is having to pay $150 for the access code which is how you do assignments and have access to the textbook. It was a really easy class that I came out making a 99.7 I believe. We also had to attend 2 concerts which were pretty cool but a little boring to me as concerts to me have singing and not just instruments.

I just felt it was better to take this class over intro to theater which required students to see 6 plays that students have to pay for and the plays sell out quick. At least most of the concerts were free to attend.
 
I only had music class once in junior highschool. I remember liking it, but it wasn't enough for me to say I love it. It's always been one of my greatest regrets not learning a musical instrument or how to properly sing by reading notes. I think music and arts are a very important part of education. However, this has not made me learn an instrument on my own as of yet. I'm pretty sure I'm tone deaf and so I doubt that I have the ear for it.
 
I LOVED choir until high school. Once I slipped into high school music classes stopped being fun and started being way too serious for my blood. They made such a big deal out of every little aspect. I loved singing - it was fun. But, I did not consider it to be a career choice and I did not want my entire life to be consumed by it. I ended up going a completely different direction after the first year of high school in choir because it was way too serious for me. They killed the fun aspect of it.
