HP Lovecraft

I'm a huge HP Lovecraft fan. He has influenced a lot of today's artists from rock bands to horror writers. I'm particularly fond of the Cthulhu mythos that he started. My favorite short story of his is "The Call of Cthulhu". My friends even play "The Call of Cthulhu" board game. Has anyone else read his works?

I have a big collection of his works, but I haven't gotten around to reading it. I'm familiar with the Cthulhu mythos, though, especially in pop culture.

Have you read "The Hound"? It's the one Lovecraft story that I have read, but a lot of people have said it's not really meant to be taken seriously as a real story, or something like that. Some people insist that it was sort of a satirical piece that references Lovecraft's style in general. I really only read it because it was so short, but I thought it was pretty good in itself.

I find it interesting that Lovecraft apparently didn't think that highly of his Cthulu mythos, and yet it has gone on to become the one thing most people know him for.

One of my absolute favorite works of his is The Outsider. Most people already know the ending for it though, regardless of if they've read it or not. The Dunwich Horror is also great; I loved the terrible film adaptation of it from the 70's.

Cthulhu is the first thing I think of when I hear H.P. Lovecraft's name. I haven't read the exact story but I'm familiar with the myth from pop culture. I'm sure it's probably much better to read the source material, though. It's kind of funny that he didn't think highly of it, but then John Lennon called a lot of Beatles songs "garbage" in later interviews--so I don't think it really makes much of a difference from the readers' point of view.
