First Day of Classes or Training

As a teacher, how do you introduce yourself on the first day of classes or training? Do you have welcome remarks or do you quote a quotation? In my own experience, I state my full name, nickname or preferred name that I want them to call me, background and years of experience. In addition to that, I also quote Confucius saying "What I hear, I forget; what I see, I remember; what I do, I understand". This is to encourage them to do the practices and exercises in the class.

I'm not a fellow teacher, but I am a student. My teachers too do the same, introduce their selves in front with their name, nickname their background and more but I'll advice you to encourage them to ask questions about you so that they'll know you. Give them your Likes and Dislikes so that they'll know what to do to not disappoint you.

First lesson must always be something easy, more related with introduction rather than learning. You want the students to get a really good impression on you, therefore you must help them maintain that impression by doing something fun.

I've been a teacher and student so I can speak from both standpoints. As a student, my teachers only tell us their names and the subject they'll be teaching. Some try to find out how much we know about their subject matter then they give us the syllabus for the term. I've done the same as well. No quote, no talk about my experience or background.

That's quite interesting. We don't have that here, sadly, for some reason. I guess our country's education system is failing too much and remains behind, therefore teachers always use the same teaching methods for the last 50 years or so, weird huh?

I work as a tutor and on my first day of teaching. I make it fun as possible. I tell my name and something interesting about myself like my other talents and interest. I believe the most important thing is to establish rapport between the teacher and the student so I try to make myself comfortable.
Aside from self-introduction, I also use the first meeting to tell the rules I want my students to follow so they can behave accordingly in the class. It also helps them to manage their expectation. As for my students, I also ask them their preferences and get to know them a little bit more. I believe this is the foundation of the good relationship between the teacher and students.
