All Ages Basic Computer Course in College

Initially, I went to college to study web design. Ended up becoming a mom and having to take a leave for a while. If I go back to school, pretty sure I would take writing classes instead - but, not the point.

I loved web design. In order to get the web design degree, you had to take a very basic computer intro course. The first lesson of this course was teaching you how to use/send emails.

I spent most of my days in this class trying not to beat my head into the wall. I rarely paid attention. Fortunately, my professor was understanding of my lack of interest in his class. I was not being rude - I was just bored out of my skull.

Ever had to take a computer class like that?

My design classes used a 3D Cad program - very out of date by today's standards. But we had to know how to use the computer for it. It was a group settings where we worked on the computer as the teacher lectured so it wasn't too boring. I think computer classes that teach you as you go rather than just have you write notes and try to figure it out on your own are best. I had one really boring computer class that I remember though where the teacher just did not have interesting subject assignments, so it felt boring.

During my two year program it was required to take a basic computer class. It was very redundant information that was easily self-taught during my high school years. The class projects were highly annoying and taken directly from the text book. But I have to admit, from time to time, he'll show me something new that was very useful for the rest of my undergrad career.

Count me in! I can remember that my college computer classes focused on three things: Word, Powerpoint and Excel. And I was bored right out of my mind because these are things I already know. And up until the end, that's what we did. No coding, HTML, photo editing... Just those three things. It was really more of a fun class and most people I know ended up passing it. You really just have to go to class and endure those boring lessons.

I wonder if they do have other aspects they teach now. Like maybe SEO, web design and graphics design, that would be very cool and I imagine a lot of students will love that.

This is usually the case when studying for courses in the area of competencies and common courses. They are an add on to the main course and can be distracting. As for me, I didn't undergo these courses since the digital revolution had not crystallized. The programs were based on Lotus which is now obsolete.

In the basic computer class, I just used to do my own thing rather then pay attention.

A couple of times it was considered as rude, but when the professor asked me a couple of things about the task at hand, I was able to reply perfectly and that is when he understood, I am just getting bored with the basics. Since then, he used to leave me alone and I used to just explore the things which I wanted.

I think that most courses and not just to do with computers, will start off teaching the very basics, and that as always been the case. While for those people that already know the basics that can be frustrating of course, but we have to realise that not everyone is going to know the basics so it's just something I think we need to tolerate until we get more into it.

If the courses don't provide the basics at the beginning and start people off with introductory topics, they can be accused of not being accessible to everyone, and just because a person is interested in a subject, at least by doing this it gives them a chance to grasp the basics before the actual main topic begins, and while that's annoying for those who already know the basics, it provides a base to step up from for those that don't.

I went through something similar recently. Some years back a needed to know how to program in HTML and CSS. So I sat down and went through how don't know how many videos about the subject on YouTube. Needless to say that if you learn something because you like it and need it you learn it faster.
I realized that even though I know how to program in HTML and CSS it was practically useless if I didn't have some sort of certificate to put into my CV. So I decided to do a course on HTML and CSS and boy was it boring. It mostly covered the basics but for me it was more then enough and I have what I need and won't be doing one of those courses again, unless it includes some other programing language that I don't know.

As you say, if you are actually interested in something then you do tend to learn it a lot faster, and while some people want to learn something strictly for a job or to be able to make money, a lot of people will do it purely for the love of the subject. Learning yourself at home can often give you that base that you need in order to be able to take a course to take that learning to the next level, but as I said before, if others are only on that course for a specific reason, they won't necessarily have started learning in their own spare time and so that's why the courses that are supposed to be more advanced, also have to cover the basics as well.

If I were you I would just secretly do something else in your computer that you're having fun with while ignoring the lessons that you already know (if the professor can't see what you're doing haha :D).
If you already had basic computer skills, couldn't you like, take a test to avoid doing such a boring class?

AutoCAD is one of the basic computer course in college. I learned and appreciate manual drawing when i used AutoCAD. You can also make designs perfectly in this platform with little less time and effort. Some companies hires and pays good money to someone who is good at it.

I guess is boring having to "learn" things that have pretty much become everyday routine might be boring, it's like learning how to use the stove, the fridge or the shower! Some institutions should understand that standards have changed and that's a skill lots of people already have so they shouldn't make it mandatory but optional, it's time that might be better invested in other more beneficial studies.

The college I entered don't care much about punctuality, and I was a working student back then so if I know much about the subject, I was often absent and would just usually go when there's an exam. Every after a major exam, I'm usually absent for a week cause I know the profs. wont give an exam or short quizzes immediately after the major ones.

Yes, specially programming. At first, it was challenging and I loved it! But then it becomes so complicated that I can't fathom it anymore so I just quitted! I mean I didn't quit the class, I just pay lack of interest to it anymore. Furtunately, I still passed the subject. I think Web Development is good, and you can learn it through A LOT of free resources. take YouTube for example. There are a lot of good teachers in YT. I already had 5+ clients, I built websites for them, and my resource? YouTube.

I am an Information Technology graduate, and having a computer knowledge is very essential and beneficial for the students for them to be more competitive, knowing our world now is where a high technology is dynamic.

There are a variety of tastes in the world. Not everyone of us is fond of the same things in life and regarding career path as well.Web design is a career assuring profession in today's world, and with big probability in the future as well.I would like also to take some web design courses and master it someday. It is important, if possibility is given to choose a career path which you like to some degree.Choosing the right one, the everydays on your workplace will pass easier than imagined, if you are doing what you like to do.

We also have a basic computer course in college. This subject made me feel a little bit bored too as it covers basic computer usage such as hardware and software definition and examples. It discussed basic computer parts such as monitor, CPU, mouse, etc. The software topics also includes basic applications such as operating system, Microsoft Office etc. The said subject is a little bit monotonous for me since I'm already familiar with the topics ever since I first used a computer at the age of 10.

I have lots of computer classes. In my case, I do not find them boring since it is all my interest and it is where I'm good at. Web design is one of my favorites. It is where I'm able to showcase my skills in Photoshop as well as in programming.

Yes, i had computer classes right from the secondary school. The classes were cumpolsary and there was no alternative available for any student, However, i always used to like the computer classes. There was something new that could be learned everytime we had a computer class. I would say that i used to look forward to the Computer class every week.

We had basic computer course lesson in college. The lesson taught though are difficult to grasp mainly because we lack computer unit where we can use one by one. We don't have web designing lesson but I believe learning any skills about it can be a good help in the future.
