    Hello from the Midwest (USA)

I have been on this site for a week or so. I have completely forgotten to introduce myself. My real name is Tim. I have three children, two still minors, and one daughter that will soon be 20. I enjoy posting about all sorts of subjects. I hope to learn some concepts to apply to my three and...

All Ages Do you think that religion is an unnecessary subject?

I think that as you look at education as a tool to get a good job, it is less important than some classes. I had to take one philosophy or religion class to get my A.A. But there were no requirements for religion in my B.A. Obviously, the people that are involved greatly influences how important...

All Ages Who was your favorite history teacher and why?

I really enjoyed my 7th grade history/social studies teacher. He was young, friendly, and made learning fun. He didn't try to degrade or embarrass kids that didn't know the answers, like some teachers would do. The subject was really different. It was Russian history. But I remember most of the...

Did you ever have a child that skipped school?

I was bullied a lot in middle school, so I skipped school to avoid harassment. If I had been popular I think I would have liked school, and never would have skipped. My oldest daughter was an "A" student, and well-liked. She rarely missed school. My son is in 3rd grade, and has some problems...

    Tablets instead of books

I don't think books are ever going to go away altogether, and that's a good thing. I personally prefer to hold a book in my hand if it is a long read, like a novel. The lightweight paperback is my preference. Reading on tablets and cell phones is nice if it's a short read, like an article or a...

Motivating children with special educational needs

When my older daughter was in school they had a system that basically mandated that no one was special and that there was no reason to strive ahead of anyone else. I don't know if this was put into place so that kids with learning or physical disabilities didn't feel left out. Although I am all...

Did you ever have a teacher that seemed not to care?

It just seemed that as the teachers aged, the less some of them seemed to care about the job. I don't know if young teachers have a better attitude because they're fresh out of college, and think they are going to change the world, and as the years drag by they become lackluster. I know I seem...

Did you ever have a teacher that seemed not to care?

This could be not caring about you, themselves, their job, or other students. I had an older woman who gave us assignments to do in front of the class. She never seemed to have any compassion for the student sweating it out. I didn't expect special treatment, but chewing me out in front of the...

Motivating children with special educational needs

I don't understand why there is a problem rewarding kids with a point system? The real world is run by doing something for a reward (you go to work, you get a paycheck). Why does this settle on one group of kids alone? If you single people out then you are giving them special treatment.

    Tablets instead of books

In Iowa most schools give kids a laptop to do most of their homework on. They are issued starting in the 5th grade and are given through 12th. Of course they have to turn them at the end of the year, and if their damaged the parents have to pay. I imagine the cost of the computers has been...
