I don't think there is any less emphasis on religion. There is simply a commitment to civic secularism. That is the shared facilities and institutions are not tied to or bent towards any particular religion. This is the same principle the US founding fathers refer to as 'separation of church and state' but in the US there is not really any such separation. The principle is not felt at an individual level such that most people will not vote for politicians from a different religion.

But this should not make people think Europeans are any less orthodox in their religions. It is simply considered a personal matter quite divorced from the business of city planning, justice or other civic services.

They made religion as a tool or political weapon to win over national or international conflicts. Do you think politics and religion go well together? The real problem here is that a lot of people are blind and naive. The worse is having a wild fanatic leader with a twisted belief and blinding the whole nation to war. The key factor is, each individual have a huge responsibility to educate himself to everything that's vital for his being. If people just listen, follow and disregard his own belief or believe without knowing and realizing facts, This world will be in total chaos. Just like what God said, "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge".
