Teaching as Tai Chi

"Teaching as Tai Chi" is an insightful and innovative reflection on modern pedagogical approaches that takes spirituality and holistic wellness seriously in a way that is refreshing. These are striking parallels between Tai Chi's principles of mastery, patience, and care and the evidence-based (cough... Western) educational strategies designed to enhance student engagement and success. In other words, Dr. Richard's emphasis on mastery-based learning and care-centred teaching offers a valuable, creative perspective for rethinking how we teach and support students in higher education.

This such a thought-provoking concept! I love how it draws parallels between the fluid, mindful nature of Tai Chi and the teaching process. Both require the practitioner to remain calm, centered, and responsive to the nuances of the environment. It makes me think about how educators can balance the structured goals of the curriculum with the evolving dynamics of the classroom. This article actually resonates with me on a regular basis. However I also incorporate yoga to with similar principles.

I think what I like best about incorporating yoga and tai chi principles consciously into tertiary pedagogy is that is helps to address the very colonial, very parochial heritages of so many institutions that were founded primarily as divinity schools. We must take cultural diversity seriously if we want to make higher learning accessible to everyone.
