In a situation where one does not have access to tutors, one might have to resort to self learning. You will have materials available with you, but you have take the time to study them out and understand them yourself.

Do you think this mode of learning is also as effective?

Depends. If the material is something you are really interested in, or even better, passionate about, then yes you can certainly learn on your own and at your own speed, which will likely be a rapid pace.

But if it's not a subject you are interested in, but are doing it just because it's required, then this becomes more difficult. A group or classroom setting with some structure and some deadlines will help nudge you towards completion.

Self learning can be effective when....
You are disciplined and you make it a habit to study regularly and treat it just like classroom learning
You have time to lean and you dedicated your time to learning.
If you don't follow these habits, you cannot self learn.

Self learning isn't as effective as learning in a class room, but a mix between class room learning and self learning can be very beneficial. Practise makes perfect and if you spend enough time you'll master any skill. It's all about time and patience.
