Safety outdoors

I remember in the sixth grade I got hit in the face with a snowball that either had a rock inside or was packed so hard that it felt like a rock. I hurt so bad I cried while other students were laughing. I didn't think it was funny and I don't remember any one asking me if I was okay.

I believe outdoor safety is of the utmost importance. I teach my grandson to think about that when he is throwing things outside. The big 'What if" conversation takes place. And the incident that took place is one that I would share had him.

Outdoor safety is paramount since the students are exposed to the elements and the vagaries of the unknown. In that connection, it becomes inevitable to teach students lessons in first aid starting at elementary level. Like wound dressing, snake bites and mouth resuscitation. This becomes an imperative when they are participating in sports and other outdoor activities.

Getting hit with a snowball and the like is always a safety issue, but can also happen indoors as well. I think common sense and a little respect should gaurd against such injurious activity.

When I think of "out-door safety" my mind goes to ideas like "wilderness survival" meaning... one can start on a harmless seeming day-hike and run into all manner of hazzards and potentially harmful situations. Common sense again; you should impart to even very young children to tell someone (preferably an adult) before venturing out into the wilderness. avoid hazards like rain-engorged streams and rivers. bring a compass and a map and have basic orienteering skills. knowledge of the local wildlife and plants so as to recognize the habitat and be able to avoid dangerous animals, basic plant identification so as to avoid noxious species....

It's dangerous out there, like the boy scout's motto you must "be prepared"
