Overview |
| In this lesson students will learn to read and write numbers 1-10, recognise them in order, and identify 1 more and 1 less. The purpose of these activities is to improve the pupils fluency with with simple number tasks. |

Procedure
| Introduction (5-10 minutes) |
| Gather your pupils' attention and draw a circle. Ask: how many circles? (answer. 1) Now draw a second circle. Ask: How many circles? (answer. 2) (Repeat until you get to 5 circles). *You can ask pupils to write their answers on a mini whiteboard or hold up their fingers to show you the answers. To assess their understanding before the tasks. |
| Exploration (20-30 minutes) |
| This is the main activity for your students. In this activity you can have students progress through the worksheets starting with C, then B then A or you can use them as differentiated for ability. A - Higher Ability, B - Middle Ability, C - Lower Ability. Hold the worksheet and provide instructions. Worksheet A1 c - Students will write how many spots each ladybird has. (This activity covers numbers 0-5) Worksheet A1 b - Students will match the number with correct picture. (This activity uses numbers 0-10) Worksheet A1 a - Students will answer the questions 1 to 10. (This activity uses numbers 0-10, adding and subtracting 1) The answers are provided for worksheet A1a on the worksheet. |
| Summary/Plenary (10-20 minutes) |
| Students can use mini-whiteboards or fingers for this activity. Tell students we're going to bring all this learning together. Show me using your fingers the number {teacher select a number between 1 & 10 e.g. 5*} | Write the number {5*} on your whiteboards. - the students will either show you 5 fingers or write or draw 5 on their mini-whiteboards. * To encourage student led learning allow some students to select a number between 1 and 10, it is a good idea to speak to the students before nominating them so they can have a number ready. To assess their knowledge further; ask students to add or subtract one from what they are showing you. |
| Extension (5-10 minutes) |
| Select up to 5 things around the classroom that you have less than 10 of. e.g. Whiteboard erasers, whiteboard pens, Maths posters. Tell the student to go around and count how many of each item. |
