Psychoactive substances used for religious and mystical purposes are collectively referred to as entheogens. An entheogen may, therefore, be described as any psychoactive substance used to induce "mystical states" of altered perception and consciousness. Most Entheogens are psychedelic hallucinogens in the sense that they induce in the user novel states of conscious experience interpreted in traditional cultures as transcendental.
