One of the things that help increasing interest of students when it comes to math is by doing math tricks. I still remember one of my teachers who performed a math trick on the entire class. I was so amazed that I got so interested in math that I tried to immediately memorize the multiplication table. :D

If you want to get your students attention, do math tricks.
 
I'm not sure where I stand on this issue. I mean, math tricks definitely are fun and interesting, but they don't really do much for the student who wants to learn math. Aside from being a simple trick, that is. I mean, explaining the concepts behind the trick might be a way around this, since it allows an look at the inner beauty and logic of math. Something like that would have been a welcome change from rote work and memorization in my elementary classes.
 
You don't need to know the secret behind a good magic trick in order to inspire somebody to become a magician.

Explaining the math tricks are a must, yes, but showing math tricks to young ones can inspire them even before showing the secret behind the trick.
