Proponents of the Westermack theory who deny repressed incestuous urge in human psychosexual constitution must explain why incestuous magical ritual is widespread in Mother Goddess religions. The incest taboo is closely associated with the prohibition of Mother Goddess worship, especially in its incestuous orgiastic ritual tendencies which persisted into historic times (as in the persecution of fertility cults in ancient Israel and the Middle Ages).
