Encouraged To be Published?

When I was in Year 11, I would always come top of the class for my original writing. I was already in the top set, and It made me feel awesome to know that my imagination was superior to everyone else's in the school.

I wrote this one story for my original writing long before the coursework was due in, simply because I used to love to write in my spare time whilst other kids my age were out on the streets.

After my teacher read it, he was trying to encourage me to get it publish. I haven't pursued a writing career although I still do so in my spare time. But did you ever have an English teacher push you to pursue ventures outside of the school arena?

I didn't have an English teacher who said that i could make money out of writing. But as an educator, I recognize talent whenever I see one and I try to encourage them to read more books and find their voice and continue to write everyday. Then i tell them when they feel like they're ready they should try and get themselves published. I have two former students who now work full time as romance writers here in the Philippines and it's great to see their books on the shelves of bookstores.

I did, though they were different teachers. Most of them taught some part of English, though, and a lot of them persuaded me to either join the campus newspaper to participate in inter-city and inter-region competitions, and I've actually won a few awards because of them. But most of my teachers that encouraged me to participate involved competitions in the school level, haha.

Well, my elementary English teacher was the first one who noticed my skills, and potential in writing. She then encouraged me to compete in various national writing contests. She really did push me into writing, and she has totally been such a good influence to me.

The teachers in my school unfortunately were there for the pay check and the generous amount of holidays and nothing more.

When I went through the school system it was at a time when some people was seeing teaching changing from an actual vocation to just a career path.

A teacher in my opinion should try and motivate a student to not only keep on doing something they're good at, but also if they can make a living out of it, then push for them to do that aswell.

My high school English teacher picked me as a representative for the yearly essay writing contest for schools one time. I was quite happy that I was chosen but also a bit nervous about it since I was not experienced at it. I did not really win the contest but I placed 4th out of 10 participants. More than that, the experience was truly enjoyable and fulfilling.

Sad to say, I changed schools after that year so I didn't get to see my teacher anymore. And my new school was, blah, nothing. It was quite a subpar school that caters only for section one students and I wasn't in section one.

With things like that though, even though it's an overly used term these days, winning isn't that important, it's what you got out of the whole experience that matters the most.

It's just a shame your other school didn't show the same dedication to your education as the first one did, and that's another reason I think schools should all be set to a same specific standard, published AND private.
