A more effective method, though much harder is to keep track of how well each student in your class has learned everything you've taught. You could use continuous assessment tests or maybe even "pop" quizzes to assess how well each student is making progress and use the information you obtain to secure better results in future.

It's definitely a hard task for the teacher when it comes to assessing the progress of the students. Only a fair and square exam can do that but I'd say it is not accurate. It also depends on the condition of the student like if he lacked sleep or is hungry then his mental capacity will not be working 100% and he would get a lower rating. But I believe that an exam once in a while will help the monitoring of the learning progress of students.

For me, I think the effective way to determine the student's progress is through writing an essay. You could see how well the student's comprehension on a certain given subject and if some of his/her notions are seemingly incorrect you could correct it and after the paper is given back to the student, that person would see his/her mistakes and learn from it.
