Introduction/Overview
The Addition Snack Bar is a fun activity that will strengthen skills in adding currency and decimal numbers. It' a realistic and enjoyable game where students are asked to select items to buy in the "Snack Bar" and compute for the total price of their snacks. It's a great way to spend time with your students or kids while strengthening their skills in adding currencies and decimal numbers.

Procedure
Addition Snack Bar Activity is a realistic and enjoyable role-playing game. Students are asked to select items to buy in their "Snack Bar" and compute for the total price of their snacks. It's a great way to spend time with your students or kids while strengthening their skills in adding currencies and decimal numbers.

Steps:

  1. Download and print the Snack Bar Food Cards (I recommend printing or pasting it in cardboard)
  2. Cut the 32 Snack Bar Food Cards.
  3. Download the Addition Snack Bar Menu*
  4. Download Activity sheet 1, and Activity Sheet 2
  5. Download the student's instructions.
  6. Ask the students to find a partner. They will then decide who will be playing "A" and "B"
  7. Set up the timer, and play the game for 10 to 15 minutes.
  8. Ask the students to shuffle the deck of cards and then distribute them evenly with the number face down. So for 2 players, each player should have 16 cards.
  9. Each player should keep their cards in a stack facing down.
  10. Player "A" turns two cards face up, and say "This is my order" and give it to player "B"
  11. Player "B" will read the order and check the price on the menu. Player "B" will write the prices on the Activity Sheet and compute the total order.
  12. Player "B" will then say the total price aloud. If he gets the correct amount he will get 1 point.
  13. The cards will then be placed at the bottom of their card pile. Afterward, they will reverse roles.
  14. When the timer goes off, each player should count the total points they got.
  15. The player with the most points wins.
  16. In the other stages of the game, they can draw 3 or 4 cards per "order" instead of just 2.

    * There is a word file so you can change the prices of the Snack Bar Menu depending on the level of students.
