Overview
In this lesson, students will learn to use numbers, including numbers represented by pictures, to solve simple problems in addition from 1 to 10. This lesson is a traditional teacher model with differentiated worksheets activities/ scaffolded learning to independent practice.

Learning Objective
  • I can understand that addition means counting together and finding the total.
  • I can add using objects, fingers, mental images, drawings.
  • I can add numbers from 1 to 10.
Success Criteria• Can identify equivalents, • Can write equivalents.

Number - addition and subtraction

Pupils should be taught to:
  • read, write and interpret mathematical statements involving addition (+), subtraction (−) and equals (=) signs
  • add and subtract one-digit and two-digit numbers to 20, including 0
  • solve one-step problems that involve addition and subtraction, using concrete objects and pictorial representations, and missing number problems such as 7 = ? − 9
US Curriculum Links / Common Core LinksCCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.OA.A.1
Represent addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, mental images, drawings1, sounds (e.g., claps), acting out situations, verbal explanations, expressions, or equations.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.OA.A.2
Solve addition and subtraction word problems, and add and subtract within 10, e.g., by using objects or drawings to represent the problem.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.OA.A.4
For any number from 1 to 9, find the number that makes 10 when added to the given number, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record the answer with a drawing or equation.

Key Vocabulary
Addition - counting of two or more groups of objects or numbers and finding how many in total.
Sum - the total amount resulting from the addition of two or more numbers, amounts, or items.

Procedure
Lead-in / Warm Up / Introduction ( 2 minutes )
  • Gather your pupils' attention
  • In chorus, ask your students to count from 1-20. You can use your fingers or clapping and say the numbers with them.
  • You will introduce the lesson: Our lesson for today is addition. (go to slide 1 of presentation 1 Adding numbers from 1-10)

    • How many strawberries do we have when we add 1 + 1 strawberries?

Presentation / Teacher Model ( 3 minutes )
  • After the 1 or 2 students answer the 1st & 2nd question, the teacher will say: Addition is counting of two or more groups of objects or numbers and finding how many in total. (go to slide 2)
    • Invite your students to answer the question: What is Addition?
Let 1-2 students answer and then show them the definition in
      slide 2.

    • Invite your students to answer the question: What is Sum?
Let 1-2 students answer and then show them the definition in
      slide 3.
      Screen Shot 2020-07-06 at 10.38.39 AM.png
  • Here are some examples of addition. Let them count and add the strawberries in the slide (go to slide 4 and 5). You can demonstrate by using your fingers to count the number of strawberries.

Main Activities ( 15-20 minutes )
This is the main part of your lesson, there will be 2 main parts: Discussion of the lesson, which will include scaffolded and semi-independent task, and then the students will be asked to answer 2 worksheets.
1. Guided discussions :
  • Before you start make sure that your students are paying attention.
  • The teacher will discuss more examples of adding using pictures to represent the numbers. (go to slide 6 and 7)
    • Make sure you explain how you added the numbers, either by oral counting or using your fingers. (go to slide 6)
      Screen Shot 2020-07-06 at 8.06.36 AM.png
    • Ask the students to model your technique and then ask them to answer either by saying it or by writing in their whiteboard. (go to slide 7)
      Screen Shot 2020-07-06 at 8.06.21 AM.png
    • Ask them to count the strawberries afterward.
2. Semi-Independent Task: Guided Activities on Adding using pictures.
  • Ask the students to answer the activity in the presentation. (Go to slide 8-15)
    • For each of the slides ask your students to write their answers in their whiteboard or paper.
    • Then show the answers on the next slide. Model how you found the answer either by using fingers or by counting the total number of strawberries.

      Screen Shot 2020-07-06 at 10.08.13 AM.pngScreen Shot 2020-07-06 at 10.08.04 AM.png
    • Make sure you pause after each slide to give time for students to answer. Ask if the students understand before moving on to the next slide.
3. Independent Task: Answer Activity sheet 1 and 2.
  • Hold up the activity sheets and explain the instructions.

  • You have to do the activities one after the other since they are developmental. (1 & 2 respectively)
  • Note for Teachers :
    • After each activity sheet is done, make sure you give appropriate feedback and discuss the answers.
    • You can make them used their whiteboards or tablets to discuss the answers.

Extension Task
Advance students can answer Activity sheet 3.

Plenary / Assessment ( 5 minutes )
1. After the activity the teacher will be asking the following questions:
  • What part did you enjoy most in the lesson?
  • What part do you think is difficult and needs further explanation?
2. The teacher will review the topics that the students had difficulty with. ( Go to slide 16-17)
Screen Shot 2020-07-07 at 5.59.34 PM.pngScreen Shot 2020-07-07 at 5.59.46 PM.png
  • You will ask your student to answer the presentation quiz and write their answers on mini-whiteboards or hold their fingers up, this way you can quickly see who is adding correctly. (Go to slide 16)
  • You will then discuss the answer to the quiz. (Go to slide 17)
